The idea of a successful director
Michel Crespin, a French theatre artist and director, had the idea of creating a festival in 1986 while founding the association ECLAT.
He wanted to introduce street art and give free access to culture to all. 6 companies, including 2 French ones, were on the bill at its creation.
Since then, the Aurillac International Street Theatre Festival has been recognised throughout Europe for the quality of its shows, which are freely available to all. More than 500 companies from all over the world come together for a week in front of thousands of spectators.
In 2004, the ECLAT association created an international centre for artistic creation, research and outreach for street theatre, called Parapluie. It is the first place where street performances are created from scratch.
Aurillac in the spotlight
The popularity of the street festival has made Aurillac famous on an international scale. The population triples on the days of the event. An inter-generational public attends during the same period. Thus, the Aurillac area also experiences strong growth in its shops and tourist attractions.
